DDR 4 2400 vs 2666 RAM-With Speed Comparison of 2400 and 2666 RAM

2400 vs 2666 RAM, is a very confusing topic. There are a lot of speculations regarding the comparison of both the RAM. Random Access Memory, aka RAM, is no doubt the most crucial component in your PC. RAM is one of the significant elements which defines the performance of a mobile or a PC. Unlike Motherboards, users tend to change or upgrade their RAMs in quite sometimes. But it might be confusing as picking a RAM does depend on speed. 2400 and 2666 Ram are very popular in the mid-range market. In this article, we’ll take about 2400 vs 2666 RAM and which RAM is better and which one you should buy.

What are RAM and its purpose?

RAM is volatile memory. That means The information stored in RAM is not permanent. Instead, it is destroyed once its purpose is solved. The RAM is used by CPU to perform basic to high-level tasks. RAM manages the multitasking ability of a CPU.

Different RAM Types

RAM takes information from Hard-drive and stores it for the time being. The hard drive is slower than RAM. So when CPU needs high-speed data transfer, RAM is used instead of standard hard drive storage so that multitasking can be smooth. More RAM means More smoothly CPU will multiple tasks.

Difference Between DDR4 2400 vs 2666 RAM

RAM speed or Memory speed referred to the amount of time RAM takes to receive a request from the processor and then perform tasks (usually related to as Time to Read and Write.) Often, A faster RAM is better because it can handle several tasks at once. Hence users experience very smooth multitasking.

Speed Comparison of 2400 vs 2666 vs 3000 MHz RAM

The speed is usually measured in Megahertz or MHz. 2400 and 2666 and 3000 are the speed of a RAM. So, 2400 MHz is slower than 2666 MHz RAM, and 3000 MHz RAM is faster than 2666 Ram.

So, in 2400 vs 2600 MHz Ram, 2666 is a clear winner just because it’s fast? Let’s find out.

Technology used to make 2400 VS 2666 RAM

2400 RAM: A SO-DIMM technology is used to make DDR4 2400 RAM. SO-DIMM is used to make computer memory using integrated circuits. Hence they are a smaller alternative to DIMM technology. They are usually used in a system where the physical space is less like in Laptops and Notebooks and such computers where Mini-ITX motherboards are being used. In DDR4 2400 SDRAM, There are 260 pins.

2666 RAM: 2666 Ram is built on SDRAM technology. Synchronous DRAM is one of the kinds of many generic DRAMs. They are synchronized with the clock speed of a microprocessor; hence they are called Synchronous DRAM. SDRAM can handle a high number of instructions given by a microprocessor at any given time.

So, Conclusion of Technology comparison of DDR4 2400 vs 2666 Ram is that 2400 Ram is built on SO-DIMM, Which is mainly used for Notebooks and Laptops. And On the other hand, 2666 Ram is built on SDRAM. Apparently, 2666 Ram is also used in Laptops and Notebooks.

But obviously, SDRAM can handle more sets of instructions, So 2666 is a better option to go with if you want a safe and fast RAM for your laptop or notebook.

Speed Difference Between DDR4 2400 vs 2666 RAM

Ram speed is the time taken by a Ram to respond processor’s instruction. In comparing, DDR4 2400 ram vs. 2666, there was not a significant difference between both of the RAMs. The results were obtained by benchmark tests.

For the test, The team has used two major benchmark applications. One is the Nova bench, and another one is User-benchmark. Benchmark usually evaluates the overall system. But for the sake of this article, We’ll keep focused on RAM scores only.

Benchmark scores of both of the DDR4 RAMs are listed below.

2400 MHz RAM Benchmark Score.

First, We have used Nova Benchmark for 2400; The total overall score was 1408. The RAM score for an 8GB 2400 MHz Ram was 193. The Ram speed was 11599 MB/s.

Now, It was time for the User benchmark test. The User Benchmark score was the same; 8 GB 2400 MHz Ram was 45.6%, Which is considered as average. The Ram model was Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB DDR4 2400MHz.

Now, let’s take a look at Ram speed according to benchmarks for 2666 MHz RAM.

NOVA BENCHMARK RAM SCORE

2600 MHz RAM Benchmark score

After 2400 MHz RAM benchmark tests, it was the turn of 2600 MHz RAM.

As previous tests, We started with the Nova benchmark; there was no major difference on the Nova benchmark. The Overall score was 1408 only while the RAM score, in particular, was around 198. At the same time, the RAM speed was 12474.

So there was not a significant difference when it comes to the Nova benchmark test. Now let’s quickly get to the User benchmark. In User benchmark, The scene was sort of similar to Nova Benchmark. The RAM speed score was 50%, which is average. So here also, there was not a significant difference.

USER BENCHMARK RAM SCORE

Memory Capacity of 2400 and 2666 MHz Ram

The 2666 MHz RAM comes in various sorts of memory capacity. It starts at 4 GB, and it goes up to 64 GB. Whereas 2400 MHz Ram starts from 4GB, and it goes up to 32 GB only. So, the 64 GB option is not even available in 2400 MHz Ram.

So, It’s quite clear, In the memory storage department, 2666 MHz DDR4 Ram wins. It is great in performance, and it allows a smooth and efficient works space. All-in-all DDR4 2666 Ram is a clear winner in this.

Input Voltage in RAMs

There is no difference in the voltage of both of the RAM. Both DDR4 RAMs of 2400 MHz and 2666 MHz have the same 1.2V voltage. On paper, DDR4 2400 MHz Ram saves up to 20% power while running.

On the other hand, It is said that DDR4 2666 MHz Ram works on the low voltage and gives out a better performance with no such considerable heating issues. There are no significant proofs to support these theories.

But to sum up, Both of Ram works similarly, On 1.2V.

Band Width Capacity

On paper, You have a clear winner in this, and that is DDR4 2666 MHz Ram.

Band Width Capacity of 2400 vs 2666 RAM

2666 MHz Ram has around 21300 MB/sec of bandwidth, whereas, 2400 Ram has 19200 MB/ sec. If you’re a fan of numbers, then 2666 is a clear winner here. The bandwidth transfer rate is faster than 2400 MHz Ram.

Again, These are just numbers, and the difference is not a major difference. If you’re using both of the RAMs sides by the side, You’ll rarely find any lag on 2400 MHz. But again, If you’re a fan of numbers, you can obviously see some difference and winner here.

CAS Latency

CAS Latency is a measuring unit to measure the delay time in between, the READ command and the time when DATA is received. In short, it is a delay time. It is measured in CL.

In a comparison of 2400 vs. 2666, We found merely any difference, or I should say very negligible difference. The 2400 RAM has CL 17 with a 0.83 clock cycle, while 2666 MHz Ram has CL19 with a 0.75 clock cycle.

Motherboard Compatibility

After all, We can find some differences here. DDR4 2400 RAM is more likely to use with Intel 100, and 200 Series of Motherboard and DDR4 Ram 2666 Ram is more suitable with Intel X99 and Series 100 motherboards.

For a higher frequency usage, You should opt for DDR4 2400 RAM as it will provide a higher working frequency. If you have a motherboard that supports 2133 RAM, Then it won’t be a problem as it will run perfectly fine.

Price

Well, This probably one of the major breaking points. “The price.”

2400 vs. 2666 Ram, has very few things different. There is not a significant difference in both of the RAMs. To be very honest, When such situations occur, The price is the only aspect that can help you to figure out which RAM to buy.

Here, 2400 RAM is a clear winner. It is quite cheaper than 2666 RAM. You can save some of your dollars here. 2666 RAM is good on paper, but When it comes to performance, there is no significant difference in both. So, If you can save some of your money by buying the most efficient, then you should do that only.

Which one to choose between DDR4 2400 and 2666 RAM

We have listed out some of the criteria, we have given you numbers and stats. But if you’re still confused about which one to choose then, You should probably go for 2400 RAM. The RAM is no less weak than 2666 RAM.

On paper, 2666 is a clear winner, but the ground reality is that these numbers, these benchmarks tests are just numbers on a sheet of paper. The real thing matter is real-life performance. DDR4 2400 RAM is not lacking behind with some significant margin. But the price tag is more logical in 2400 RAM.

But, If you don’t have any problem with those extra bucks, then you may think of DDR4 2666 RAM. With Extra bucks, Comes Extra bit of MHz. If you’re a serious gamer and you have to perform multitasking a lot, then you should spend some of your extra savings and a DDR4 2666 RAM.

You’ll get what you paid for. The DDR4 2666 RAM is faster when you want to do some programming and gaming. Those extra MHz might help in your daily process. And if you don’t have a budget issue, then going with the one having more features is not a bad thing.

Are You Upgrading Your RAM?

If you have a DDR4 2400 MHz RAM and you’re thinking of upgrading to DDR4 2666 MHz Ram, then please, don’t upgrade it if you think that you need to upgrade then upgrade it to some higher frequency RAM like DDR4 3000 or DDR4 3200 MHz.

But, If you have some old DDR3 Ram, then you can upgrade it to 2666 Ram. Because DDR3 RAMs are very slow in comparison to DRR4 RAMs. The maximum capacity of DDR3 is 16 GB, while DDR4 RAMs can go up to 64 GB. The Minimum clock speed of a DDR4 RAM is the Maximum clock speed of DDR3

So If you have a DDR3 ram and you want to upgrade then, you can do it, but if you have a DDR4 2133 MHz or DDR4 2400 MHz, then you should consider it to upgrading to 2666 RAM.

Conclusion

Rams are of 2 main types, DDR3 and DDR4. The RAMs are classified on the basis of their capability to handle instruction provided by the processor. This capability is measured in time consumed by a RAM to perform the task. The measuring unit of the same is Megahertz or MHz. DDR4 is the recent update in RAM technology, is most famous, and hence, The topic, DDR4 2400 MHz vs. DDR4 2666 MHz RAM, came up.

2400 and 2666 are the frequency on which the RAM works. There is not a major difference, but there is some minor difference that can affect a particular audience. The Benchmark tests show us that 2666 RAM is better in speed and efficiency. But the numbers are not significant that you have to switch your DDR4 2133 and 2400 MHz RAM to DDR4 2666 MHz.

Well, If you have a pretty old RAM like DDR2 or DDR3 RAM, then it is obvious you have to upgrade your RAM to DDR4. If you’re not a serious programmer or a gamer, you can pick DDR4 2400 MHz RAM. But if you’re into serious gaming and you’re one of them who picks up “tiniest bit” lag quite easily, and your budget allows you, Then you should definitely go with DDR4 2666 MHz RAM.

An Additional Tip

For those who are looking for upgrading their RAM. You should only upgrade or change a RAM when you’re sure that your RAM is lacking behind in comparison to other peripherals. If your PC is running slow and you want to increase its performance, you can prioritize your upgrade.

But your processor is a bit old, then upgrading to a better RAM won’t solve the problem, so it’s better to change a processor first and then analyze your need afterward.

If you’re a gamer and you’re noticing that performance is degrading, then it might be possible that The problem lies in GPU, and you might have to upgrade your graphics card

All I want to say is that changing RAM is not the only option to speed up your PC’s performance. I hope you liked the comparison of 2400 vs 2666 RAM. And that all for today. See you guys in the next one, Peace!
